Sarah Taylor: Abuse, neglect, exploitation
and death in residential care
Only a vote for Palmer United will protect people with disabilities in residential care, says Sarah Taylor, VLC Eastern Region Lead Candidate for the Palmer United Party
“In Victoria approximately 5,000 people with disabilities live in supported accommodation operated by either the Department of Human Services (DHS) or publicly funded disability agencies where they are at risk of abuse and neglect,” Ms. Taylor said.
“This issue has been ignored by successive state governments and it is an absolute disgrace.
“A 2014 report expressed ‘real concerns that abuse and neglect of people with disabilities, including neglect of health care, is systemic in group homes’.
“In 2010-11 there were 272 deaths of people with disabilities who were living in supported
accommodation. That’s more than five deaths per week.
“The current government has refused to release the full number of deaths in supported
accommodation since 2011 so we have a scandalous situation where death in residential care is being hidden from public scrutiny.
“If elected to the Legislative Council the Palmer United Party will force the new state government to release the mortality figures and launch an inquiry into the abuse, neglect, exploitation and deaths of people with disabilities in supported accommodation.”
