Disabled abused over 13 years
by Shannon Deery, Herald Sun, page 2, Saturday, 25 April, 2015
A disability worker has admitted a 13-year history of sexual abuse against some of the state's most vulnerable people in a case that has shocked authorities.
Almost all of Craig Gilbert Handasyde's victims were unable to communicate, meaning they could never report the abuse.
One of his eight male victims was deaf, blind and mentally impaired.
The men, aged between 25 and 50, were abused between 1998 and 2011 while living in Department of Human Services disability supported accommodation.
Mr Handasyde, 47, was employed by DHS as a disability development services officer to care for the men.
Instead he walked around their homes naked, climbed into bed with them at night, and masturbated some of them. Some tried to ask him to stop by pushing him away, but it didn't deter him.
The Melbourne Magistrates' Court heard yesterday Mr Handasyde, a devout Christian, handed himself into police late last year because it was important for his faith.
Mr Handasyde's lawyer said he would plead guilty at a hearing next month.
LISA Comment: All these years of abuse, whilst DHHS reactive management did nothing!
A recent communiqué from DHHS HO complaints, states they do not accept or investigate systemic complaints about their management.
Failure to ensure consistent proactive management at all levels creates the potential individual issues, disconnections between service intent and service delivery to occur at their covert, behind closed doors, group home, residential services throughout the state.
